Tutorial: Raspberry Pi | Adding start menu items

I use this method when i want to add custom links in my start menu, in this tutorial i added Cura “3D Slicer”.

The menu files for the start menu are stored in the directory:
/usr/share/applications
(with the .desktop extension)

Let’s say you want to add Cura to the ‘Programming‘ section of the start menu:

  1. create a 32 x 32 pixels .png icon for the application and save it to /usr/share/pixmaps/
  2. create a new desktop file: sudo nano /usr/share/applications/Cura.desktop
  3. enter the following lines of text:
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Cura
Comment=Cura 3D Slicer
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/cura.png
Exec=/home/pi/Apps/Cura
Terminal=false
Categories=Development;

4.

  • restart the lxde environment by typing:
    lxpanelctl restart
